most difficult social and cultural issues which are found in a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual society, in particular the conflict between the need for competence in language of the majority culture and
the need to preserve the home languages of bi-cultural communities. It is a case which has received a great deal of publicity, also, because of the fact that there is
a child involved and allegations of potential child abuse have been raised.
On the one hand, one could assert that it is essential that there is a common mode of communication which is available to all, whatever their first language, and
therefore both adults and children should be encouraged to be competent in English where that is the most commonly-used language (as would be the case in the US and the
UK). On the other hand, it is well established that culture is very much defined and preserved through language, and to insist that home languages and mother tongues are regarded
as in some way subordinate or inferior to English is to denigrate the validity of the cultures from which these languages originate.
It has always been the case that as immigrant communities progress through subsequent generations, they demonstrate a greater degree
of integration and/ or assimilation with the majority culture and whilst this might contribute to a higher level of harmonisation across the nation as a whole, it often also means
that the culture, traditions and language of the original immigrant groups is irretrievably lost. Consequently, there is considerable interest amongst minority groups in preserving or reconstructing aspects of their cultural
