It is a deep and revealing story that speaks multitudes about relationships and true love. In this story the main character Janie is faced with many situations in her life
over which she has no control concerning men and marriage. But, she ultimately finds true love in one man, and as such seeks marriage for love which proves far more
rewarding and true than any arranged marriage. The following paper argues that in the case of Janie love marriage is far more rewarding and real than arranged marriage.
Marriages: Their Eyes Were Watching God When Janie is a new young woman her grandmother tells her it is time for her to
marry and although Janie feels she is not ready, nor does she want to marry, the choice is made for her. She is ultimately made to marry a man named
Logan. While it is not necessarily an arranged marriage such as one would see in various cultures, it is a marriage she had no choice concerning. She is incredibly unhappy
in this marriage and she tells her grandmother as much. She tells her that she is not loving him, and that she "wants to want him sometimes" that she "dont
want him to do all de wantin" (Hurston 192). Her grandmother tells her something that seems specific to all arranged marriages when she says, "Wait awhile, baby. Yo mind will
change" (Hurston 193). Many people may argue that in this particular case Janie may well have been happy with the arranged marriage
had Logan been a kind man. She would have done just as her grandmother had predicted and learned to love him and be happy. Many would well argue that marriage
