In his 1895 play, The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde created a work that many critics feel is the epitome of the Victorian comedy of manners. In the play, Wildes satire is based on the premise that Victorian society should show trivial matters greater respect, rather than showering their attention on the issues that society regards as serious. As this suggests, Wilde turns Victorian values upside down and this is particularly true in the manner in which Wilde expresses views in the play pertaining to marriage. The main protagonists are John Worthing, who is known as "Jack," and Algernon Moncrieff, who is referred to as "Algy." While Jack and Algy are presented as witty and sophisticated young men, their perspectives on love and marriage are nevertheless completely conventional (Hornby 686). They offer cynical comments on marriage, such as "Divorces are made in Heaven" (Wilde 453). However, the objective of both Jack and Algy is not to seduce the women who have captured their affections, that is, Gwendolen Fairfax, the daughter of Lady Bracknell and Cecily Cardew, Jacks ward, but rather their goal is to marry them. As this suggests, while both Jack and Algy ridicule the idea and conventions of marriage, they both ultimately support it with their actions (Hornby 687). This goal of marriage, however, is complicated by the fact that both men have fabricated elaborate fictions that facilitate their pursuit of trivial pleasures.
