the plight of the married woman in a society controlled by men. Most of her works, in relationship to feminism, create women who somehow seem to vow that they will
never belong to anyone, from some point on, but themselves. The following paper examines "The Storm as it involves these notions revolving around a modern marriage of Chopins time. Of
course, it should be understood that Chopins modern marriage was not a reality as of yet, but something she presented as ideal in a modern world. The Storm
In "The Storm" we have Calixta at home "sewing furiously on a sewing machine" (Chopin). She is so caught up in her sewing that she does not see the storm
coming until it is almost too late. Her husband and young child are at the store worrying that she might be angry at them or that she may be frightened.
All this points to a simple domestic contentment, if not domestic bliss of sorts. But, then a man, an ex-boyfriend of Calixtas shows up while she is getting clothes off
the line, asking if he can remain there till the storm passes. "He expressed an intention to remain outside, but it was soon apparent that he might as well
have been out in the open: the water beat in upon the boards in driving sheets, and he went inside, closing the door after him" (Chopin). This brought him into
the house and soon into the arms of Calixta who never really says a word that would invite him to take her sexually, but who obviously desires the man for
