They had little power economically and socially, at least at first glance, and their lives clearly revolved around their ability and success in relationship to marriage. The following paper examines marriage in Austens novel Pride and Prejudice. Marriage in Austens Pride and Prejudice While the main character in this story is one who clearly seeks more than stability in a marriage, the novel itself is obviously one that illustrates the rules of the society in relationship to marriage. In the very first sentence of the story marriage is mentioned, and it is clear how important marriage is in the society: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife" (Austen Chapter 1). In this sentence one clearly sees that men need wives and that most people simply assume that if a man has good money then he surely needs a wife if he does not already have one. And it also illustrates that a woman has need of finding the wealthiest man she can, regardless of whether she likes or loves him. In Austens society marriage was a way to survive as an individual and in society. Men and women in society who were not married were seen as eccentric at best, and unacceptable at the worst. In Austens time, and in the novel, one sees that a woman has no power in the world of economics and ultimately very little, if any choice, when it comes to accepting marriage proposals. A woman who is given a marriage proposal by a man with more money than her family is not to dismiss this proposal ...
