very powerful element of many a novel or short story. The relationships between men and women have intrigued and confused many an author throughout time. In Raymond Carvers "Are These
Actual Miles?" and Ernest Hemingways "Hills Like White Elephants" we are provided with two intriguing looks at the relationships between men and women in a marriage. In the following paper
we examine each story individually and then provide a comparison of the two stories as they present marriage. Are These Actual Miles? In this particular story we are
greeted with an understanding that the couple has made many sacrifices and not necessarily sacrifices which result in a good marriage. They are necessary sacrifices which have obviously compromised the
dreams and the individuality of the couple. We understand that they are not happy and that they look back on their past as better than it was, clinging to it
as though it were the only magical aspect of their relationship. We note this element in the following lines: "But there were some big parties back there, some fine travel.
To Reno and Tahoe, at eighty with the top down and the radio playing. Food, that was one of the big items. They gorged on food.
He figures thousands on luxury items alone" (Carver NA). From these lines we note that the couple is likely very superficial and lost. Their problems revolve around money and
material possessions, truths that hide their lack of feelings for one another, and truths which hide their superficial natures. This reality is further emphasized by the affair which unfolds and
by the alcoholism that the husband suffers. By all accounts, this couple is not happy and they have likely never been happy. They have sought comfort and life through money
