thus also in her home as well. She and her husband are both products of their society, though Nora is the only one who eventually sees this. They are a
couple who have entered into a marriage and laid the foundation of the marriage according to the roles set up by their 19th century society. The following paper examines the
marriage of Torvald and Nora, discussing how the society has set the foundations that allow for no freedom of individuality, thus inadvertently ending this marriage. Marriage in A
Dolls House In the very beginning of the play we already get the sense of where Torvald and Nora sit, in regards to their position as husband and wife, man
and women, master and perhaps servant or employee. In the beginning of the play Nora comes in the house after shopping and Torvald says, "Is that my little lark twittering
out there?" (Ibsen). This line could of course be an endearing one that is meant with love and adoration, but we quickly realize it is not the case for he
then calls her his "little squirrel bustling about" and when she asks him to come see what he has bought he tells her not to bother him, closing his door.
When he comes back out he says "Has my little spendthrift been wasting money again?" (Ibsen). From this simple beginning we already begin to see that Torvald believes he should
call his wife endearing, demeaning names in this case, and then scold her for spending money. The title of the story further supports this perspective because Nora is nothing but
a doll, a pretty thing, a simple wife, that does not possess any intellect or sense of reason or logic. She is to be treated as a little pet, a
