in which Sophocles lived and wrote was no exception. In fact, this civilization became the Western ideal of what a democratic society should be. There were specific attitudes
regarding marriage and family and the roles they should play within society. In fact, in ancient Greece, the line between these roles and society were so blurred, they actually
became one and the same. Sophocles was a popular dramatist of his time; he delighted in breathing new life into old myths while at the same time satirizing contemporary
society. One of his most famous plays, Oedipus the King (also referred to as Oedipus Rex in some texts) featured a story with which audiences were already well familiar.
The tragic protagonist, King Oedipus of Thebes, unknowingly committed the cardinal sins of killing his father, marrying his mother Jocasta and procreating with her. But instead of merely
retelling the story, Sophocles interpretation sheds a great deal of light onto his fellow Greek citizens and reflects the values by which they lived and provides considerable insight into the
roles of marriage and family. As Oedipus the King begins, the monarch of Thebes is struggling with the deadly effects of a devastating plague that has been killing many of
his subjects. He speaks as if he is an anguished father: "My children, I am filled with pity. I knew what you were longing for when you came
here. I know only too well that you are all sick - but sick though you may be, there is not one of you as sick as I.
