The attitudes and laws of the Middle Eastern
countries that are primarily Islamic are often aligned with the
political atmosphere and the degree of religious fervor that accompanies
the political rule of the time. Even in the more fundamentalist
countries, however, there is a move toward a liberalization of the
marriage laws with a concomitant increase in the rights of women within
