that entails many rights and responsibilities. Marriage is the joining of husband and wife according to laws, customs and beliefs." The following paper presents this perspective through examining and analyzing
marriage. What is Marriage? Marriage is an institution that has been around since the beginning of any civilization in the history of humanity. It has been used to bring
countries together through political alliances and has a long history in all religions of the world. While many cultures differ in relationship to how they see and interpret marriage, in
the Western world marriage has long been a political and personal reality that generally abides by laws. Each culture has particular laws, written or otherwise, that the citizens or members
of the culture abide by, and agree to abide by. Even if a culture sees the dissolution of marriage to be a simple thing the notion of marriage is still
important. One could well argue that in all cultures the institution of marriage has generally been an institution that encouraged and sheltered the next generation of individuals. As one author
indicates, "everywhere, in isolated mountain valleys, parched deserts, jungle thickets, and broad plains, people have come up with some version of this thing called marriage" (Gallagher). Marriages have generally been
