protagonists in order to express the societal themes envisioned by each author. Marquez begins his text with one of the most memorable first lines in all of literature: "On
the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on" (Marquez 1). As
this indicates, this is a tale of murder. Why Nasar is to be murdered is intimately intertwined with the machismo culture of Latin America, in which family honor is paramount.
Ironically, the bishop is coming to bless the marriage that is the impetus for the murder. Bayardo San Roman, a wealthy man, came to the village in order to find
a wife. He decides on Angela Vicario and proceeds to court her in the accepted manner, which involves Angelas family much more than it does Angela personally. Bayardos courtship
of Angela addresses the rituals that surround marriage in Latin American culture during this time. Bayardo brings Angela presents, such as a music box with inlaid mother-of-pearl for her birthday.
The purpose of these gifts is not to symbolize his attraction for the girl, but rather to demonstrate his affluence and power to her family. He earns the support avid
