village is dying and so is the Buendia family, as the last of the Buendias, the last of a series of men named "Aureliano," Aureliano Babilonia, struggles to live through
his quest for knowledge, but finds death instead, hidden in the script of ancient prophecies. The meaning behind Marquezs ending to the Buendia family ties in with the novels underlying
theme, which is that time is cyclical. Memory in this work is not confined to the past and time refuses to be divided neatly into a linear progression of past,
present and future. This is demonstrated symbolically through the use of the same names in generation after generation of the family. Personalities, as well as names, recycle, as the men
and women of the family tend to demonstrate character traits that exemplified one or more of their immediate ancestors. Central to the story of Aureliano Babilonia is his fascination with
the prophecies of Melquiades, which are in a seemingly indecipherable manuscript. Melquiades was a gypsy who befriended the founding patriarch of the Buendia family, Jose Arcadio Buendia. The ghost of
Melquiades is a guide in Aureliano Babilonias quest for knowledge and helps him in regards to deciphering the prophecies. By the end of the novel, Aureliano is spending most of
his time in Melquiades old laboratory, working over the old manuscripts, which he learns are written in Sanskrit. The role that gypsies play in the novel is also connected to
