and black men and women were barely considered people. They were, in the United States of America, nothing more than chattel. Stories of harsh treatment on the plantation are legendary.
While many slaves gave up, feeling as if they had no choice in the matter, others rebelled. As more and more escaped, a great deal of slaves were faced
with the choice of living under slavery or becoming a fugitive and joining a maroon society. While that was a positive solution to the problem of the American custom,
escapees were not necessarily better off. There were several issues that faced the maroon societies which formed to provide a life of freedom for former slaves. As with any new
community, these societies had some difficulty getting off the ground and sustaining themselves. When faced with the task of creating communities, many issues crop up such as division of labor,
type of government and issues pertinent to schooling. One thing, for example, that the maroon societies seemed to lack was an educational system. On the plantation, slaves could sometimes
take advantage of education and many tried to learn to read. Maroon societies, for the most part, never seemed to grow and prosper in the way that modern society would
consider productive. II. Brutality Under Slavery It is hard to fathom the concept of accepting the ownership of people but during the nineteenth century, it is
important to realize, that at the very least it was just something that existed. Today, few question the traditions in America of keeping dogs as companions and eating cows. In
