Marlon Brando may not have invented film acting but he redefined it for generations of actors who seek to capture the elusive magic he generated on screen. Born on April 3, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska to Marlon Sr. and the former Dorothy "Dodie" Pennebaker, Brandos father was a farm supplies salesman and his mother was a lifelong thespian who was regarded as the heart and soul of the Omaha Community Playhouse (Kemp, 1996). Unfortunately, both Brandos parents were alcoholics and spent more time fighting with each other than interacting with young Marlon and his sisters Frances and Jocelyn. Brando shared his mothers passion for acting, and his most memorable moments of childhood were of his mother acting and singing for him. In fact, the title of Brandos 1994 autobiography, Songs My Mother Taught Me, pays tribute to those cherished memories. Brando wanted to act, but Marlon Sr. thought acting was effeminate and promptly sent him off to a military academy in Minnesota (Kemp, 1996). However, nothing was going to stop Brando from pursuing his dream and after being expelled, he headed for New York where he studied acting with the renowned coaches Stella Adler and Erwin Piscator, where he was introduced to the acting technique developed by Konstantin Stanislavski commonly referred to as "The Method." This requires the actor to draw on his personal experiences to create a characterization. Stella Adler heaped high praise on her accomplished pupil, saying, "Hes the most keenly aware, the most empathetical human being alive" (Kroll, 1994, p. 54).
