This company founded in Leeds and is now an international retailer. If we look at the company, its background and method of operation we can see how and why the internationally operations were undertaken. This is also an interesting case study as it not only shows how expansion can take place in internationally for a retailer, but also highlights some of the dangers of that expansion. The paper will start by examining Marks and Spencer as a company to gain an insight to the background and consider the importance of international expansion in the companies own make up. 2. Background There are many reasons why a company will seek to take the leap to change from a national business to an international organisations. These may be push or pull factors. The attraction of markets where there is an apparent gap, that company feels it can fill may be seen as an attraction, an opportunity to increase profits. This may be seen as a pull factor. Where a market at home is becoming more competitive, or the goods are in a mature market, with decline profits, there may be a need to find alternate markets, this is a push factor, and is also a reason for seeking to change the company. If we look at a leading UK company such as Marks and Spencer, and the time at which they decided to move into the international arena, we may argue that it was a combination of the two, but only a result of pull factors, attractions that they could not resist.
