retail chain has had a number of problems over the last decade, loosing and then regaining customers as a result of numerous problems, many of which revolved around the target
market of the stores changing and the firm failing to adapt to the new market conditions (Rose, 2007). In recent years there ahs been a turnaround, many aspects of the
operations have been revived, this chain that once refused to pay for media advertising now has a large multimedia marketing budget, the style and stock of the stores has change
and the target market has been redefined along with the use of special offers are all playing a role in the current performance (Kotler and Keller 2008; Daily Mail, 2009).
The way in which operations occur within the stores may be examined in order to assess the way that the firm is
competing today and determine whiter or not there is room for improvement, the use of the 4 Vs model; volume, variety, variation and visibility.
Volume looks at the amount of products or services that are made available. The size of the store and the amount of stock that is held indicates that
there is the desire for a high level of sales. There are other indicators, with a large operation and many goods that are relativity low in price there is the
aim to gain repeat customers, this also support high volume sales, as well as the queues that are seen at the tills which are constantly renewing. The fact that this
