we cannot attend to our higher needs, such as our desire to perform to our fullest potential, if we are struggling to breathe and find food. He believed that there
are five stages in the hierarchy, and that once the basic needs are satisfied, we move up to the next level and satisfy those needs; when those are satisfied we
move up again, and so on. The five levels are generally considered to be first, "biological and physiological needs"; second, "safety needs"; third, "belongingness and love needs"; fourth, "esteem needs";
and fifth, "self-actualization" (Chapman, 2002). This paper examines each level with regard to market segmentation and product placement. Discussion One thing to keep in mind is that its not possible
for us to tend to a "higher level" need if a "lower level" need is still unmet. That is, we cannot consider what taking an advanced course might mean for
our personal development (level 5) if our marriage is falling apart (level 3); nor can we work on our marriage (level 3) if were losing our housing (level 2) (Chapman,
2006). Every level has to be stable before we can go to the next one. But this distinct separation has an advantage for advertisers, because it suggests exactly what
products are suited to which market segment. Chapman has suggested the type of products and services that are appropriate and most likely to be important to us at each step.
At the most basic level, which is survival, the market will be for products that help us survive, including "abuse helplines, social security benefits ... [and] roadside recovery" (Chapman, 2006).
