identifying and assessing the competition and the way they are competing. 2. The Mediterranean Container Shipping Market The shipping industry is responsible for about 90% of all merchandise which
is transported, with the Mediterranean area reflecting the general global trends in shipping (OECD, 2004). In the Mediterranean the ports and the traffic Gioia Tauro, Algeciras, Valencia, Barcelonaand Genoa are
the five busiest ports in the Mediterranean, where there has also been an average growth of 8.8%, this is lower that some other areas, for example, there has been an
increase of 14.4% in Northern Europe. The growth is mainly accounted for by Algeciras where there was a 16.7% increase to the handling of 2.9 million TEU in 2004, and
the 15.9% increase at Barcelona where 1.9 million TEU was seen in 2004, and 7.1% increase at Valencia with 1.9 million TEU handled (ISL, 2005). However, this alone does not
indicate that these are suitable ports or whether or not these are the ports that should be considered for expansion. For this we need to look at the types of
ports, the level of trade and the general patterns that are seen. The services which are seen in the area can be classified as one of two main services;
