Though Muellers still is a strong brand, it has become somewhat of the unwanted stepchild in recent years. It was a leading brand of Bestfoods,
but it significantly dropped in stature when Unilever acquired Bestfoods. Unilever has some of the worlds leading brands, including Lipton, Ragu and Hellmans, three former Bestfoods brands that now
collectively account for 83 percent of Unilever Bestfoods total annual sales (Thompson, 2001). Unilever recently announced that it would pare its more than
1600 brands down to 400, an eventual reduction of 75 percent. It has been working toward that end for some time (Thompson, 2001), and Muellers has been one of
the brands it has sold off to others. It was not another food company that bought the Muellers brand, however, but New York University. The purchase has set
off a string of opinions, debates and even a few court cases over whether a nonprofit organization should hold a for-profit company (Milofsky, 2001).
