agency, a small firm without a dedicated marketing department there were a number of valuable opportunities presented which may not have been present in a larger organization. The company is
a start up company; as such marketing has been important in establishing the firm and gaining customers. A debt collection agency is not a business where there is a natural
draw to the customers, for some customers the need to make use of the services of a debt collection agency may be a grudge purchase, for others it is a
service that is already provided in a relatively mature industry. However, in difficult economic times there are increasing levels of defaults and the for debt collection agencies there is an
increase in demand for services. These conditions provided a unique opportunity for learning. The owner, Eric Neal, who was the supervisor for the internship, had been personally undertaking all
marketing functions for the company. When starting with the firm, after a brief orientation, and working directly under the supervision of Eric Neal full responsibility for the marketing activities in
the period of the internship (23rd May - 18th June). A number of different areas of knowledge were developed. One of the greatest areas of learning was an appreciation
and understanding of market research and the way it can be used to maximise the functioning of the organization. Lessons in the classroom look at the way that market research
