positive qualities about themselves of which they previously were unaware. Founded during the early years of World War II in Britain by educator Kurt Hahn, the program was "brought
to the United States by Josh Miner" (General FAQs, 2004). It gained publicity in the United States during the Kennedy Administration as an option for preparing volunteers to the
newly-created Peace Corps to live in conditions greatly unlike those to which they were accustomed (General FAQs, 2004). Todays Organization The larger Outward
Bound organization operates in several countries of the world, and Outward Bound USA alone trains more than 7,000 customers annually in more than 750 separate courses (General FAQs, 2004).
The school at Hurricane Island, Maine, is one of several "campuses" located within the United States. No Outward Bound USA site is totally
self-contained. Though the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School is located in the Northwoods of Maine, it offers classes and experiences in the Caribbean, Austria, Italy and other locations far
outside the boundaries of the United States, and certainly outside the boundaries of Maine. At present, the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School offers
courses for a wide range of interests and ages. The Wilderness course is for youth and adults seeking to broaden themselves and to "Live Bigger," as the marketing tag
