South Carolina. The island was named after the famed Nevin Nollop, who was credited with inventing the panagram (which contains every letter of the alphabet), "the quick brown fox
jumps over the lazy dog". The people on this island live an idyllic life, although definitely a simple one. People write letters as the basic form of communication
and so words and letters are of the utmost importance in this community. The drama begins however when letters begin to fall
from the statue that stands as a tribute to Nollop himself, and the people of this island take this very seriously. The council members determine that as each letter
falls from the statue, so too must it be removed from both spoken and written language. What occurs then is both funny and clever, as the people of the
island have fewer and fewer words at their disposal for communication. But, what emerges in the wake of this apparent disaster is a creativity to figure out new ways
of communicating. There is a group of islanders however who secretly meet to invent their own panagram which is to be
created from the fewer letters left available. Their hope is that in creating such a word, they would be able to remove the dictate of the council and to
again live as they did. And so, as they write letters back and forth to one another and as fewer and fewer letters are available to them, the story
becomes much funnier and extremely creative. Analysis of Characters The characters in this book are extremely creative and very distinct.
