and styles. It was an exciting time in terms of creativity and everyone would flock to Paris. While that period of time was exciting for the art world, things are
by no means stagnant today. Much has happened between the mid-1800s and today. In examining two artists-Claude Monet and Mark Bradford-one will begin to see similarities even though the men
are from different eras. There are differences between them of course. Also, these two artists have drastically different styles. Their lives are very different and their choices are as well.
Still, they share the desire to create, and they both go against the grain. "Disappear Like a Dope Fiend" is a 2006 collage by Mark Bradford. A quote that
appears next to this work, attributed to the painter is as follows: " Im like a modern-day fl?neur. I like to walk through the city and find the details and
then abstract them and make them my own. Im not speaking for a community or trying to make a sociopolitical point. It becomes an artwork, but it has these references
which I find interesting. At the end its my mapping-my subjectivity-and me trying to find those memories and details that point to something that Im trying to really figure out"
(Bradford, 2006). One cannot help relate the artists words to the painting itself. Similarly, one might take such words and see that they are also what artists like Monet do.
The paintings are seemingly a part of such artists in inexplicable ways. In examining his biography, Mark Bradford is not someone who took the traditional route to art. That is,
