Historical Setting and Literary Genre We know the Gospel of Mark was written by John Mark, one of Peters closer associates (NIV Study Bible 1995, p. 1488). It was
from Peter that Mark learned what Christ had done and said. Mark learned as he listened to Peter preach to the people, which means that Mark was not necessarily knowledgeable
about the sequence of lessons from and acts of Christ. There is some disagreement as to the date Mark wrote this Gospel. Some believe it was in the 50s
and early 60s while others suggest it was written in the 70s (NIV Study Bible 1995, p. 1488). It is generally agreed that Mark wrote it while residing in Rome
and that it was written for the Gentiles (NIV Study Bible 1995, p. 1489). The fact that the Gospel was accepted and disseminated so quickly supports the premise that it
was written for Gentiles who were unfamiliar with Jewish customs and traditions (NIV Study Bible 1995, p. 1489). One historical fact that may be important is that the Christians in
Rome were under very severe persecution at this time. It is suggested this is the reason for Marks emphasis on suffering and how Christ suffered to redeem them (NIV Study
Bible 1995, p. 1489). Marks Gospel is written in rather straightforward and simple language. Mark seems to go from one event in Christs life quickly, often with very little or
no transitions. This is evidenced in the verses to be discussed where Mark goes from John stopping someone from casting out demons to Christ discussing little ones. The Book
