he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!" 25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching-and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. One might sum up this passage by saying that it concerns a man who was possessed by an evil spirit who was healed of his affliction by Jesus simply speaking to the spirit, demanding that it leave the man. In other words, Jesus spoke and the man was healed. However, the spiritual healing that took place in Capernaum is not easily duplicated in the modern word, as healing necessarily entails establishing a great deal of trust. Healing is a risky business and people naturally have questions about who they can trust to help them. Do they have the authority, that is, the expertise necessarily to help them leave darkness and embrace the light. One way to establish trust is to establish ones authority or power to accomplish the healing that is required. While the man is still possessed by the evil spirit, he asks if Jesus has "come to destroy us?" and then indicates that he knows Jesus true identity, saying, "I know you are-the Holy One of God" (Mark 1:24).
