a description of the death of Frank Corbo, Lucia Santas second husband and the father of three of her children, who has been languishing in an insane asylum for many
years. Lucia Santa is relieved, rather than grieved, and she makes arrangements for Corbo to be buried in the hospital cemetery. As with their mother, none of the children are
grieved and Gino goes out to carouse with his friends, being warned by his mother to come home early as they would leave at 7 a.m. to drive to Long
Island for the funeral. However, Gino does not return and is still missing the next day. Vinnie and Larry look for him and are told that Gino and some
friends have gone to the morning show at the Paramount movie theater. Hearing this news, Lucia Santa decides to leave him and invites Teresina Coccalitti to take his place in
the car and she readily accepts. Teresina anticipates being able to relate how Lucia Santa wept tears of anger at her son for not attending his fathers funeral. Chapter
18: This chapter begins by picturing Lucia Santa, miserably depressed and exhausted, falling into a trouble sleep while sitting at the kitchen table. Her sleep is haunted by the fact
that she does not understand why Vincenzo and Octavia, her children whom she considers to be her best, are unhappy and why Lorenzo and Gino, her troublemakers, are joyful.
