two great-aunts and a rather eccentric aunt. Although the life of the two girls is certainly unstable, there is continuity to it primarily through the medium of housekeeping, which serves
as a overarching symbol throughout this work. Robinson pictures the daily tasks involved in living as healing rites that occur with the seasons, stirring up both memories of the past
as well as hope for the future. For example, in a passage where Ruth describes a day in which her grandmother was
hanging sheets to dry in the spring sunlight, her description quickly becomes poetry as the words evoke images of a thawing earth and the coming spring. As the grandmother pins
the sodden sheets to the line, they billow in her hands and take on a seeming life of their own. This passage demonstrates how Robinson connects housekeeping to the seasons
and to nature. Thorough housecleaning is a spring event that wipes out the cobwebs of winter and refreshes the spirit of those living in the house, as much as it
cleans the interior. It is also clear from Ruths descriptions of housecleaning that this is a process that connects her physically and
symbolically with the past. She states that while machines are helpful, its "comforting" to know that the old ways of refreshing a home are still good. She points out that
even Shakespeare mentioned the "white sheet bleaching on the hedge," which is a time-honored method of whitening linen. Robinson goes on to describe various housekeeping tips?a warning to never dry
