is time that this debate is stopped once and for all. Marijuana should be legalized in the United States. Marijuana is not an evil substance. In fact, it has been proven helpful to a large number of persons. Marijuana brings a number of benefits to American society, which includes medical benefits, monetary benefits, and benefits to the criminal justice/legal system as well. Controversy has surrounded marijuana and its use for decades. For example, there was an anti-marijuana hysteria of "Reefer Madness" era of the 1930s (PG). In the 1960s and 70s, there was widespread acceptance of smoking marijuana (PG). The Reagan era brought "zero tolerance" drug laws. More recently, however, there has been a push for medicinal use of marijuana. Hyperbole and misinformation have marked the crusades for and against marijuana. New research tools, however, have been helping to separate myth from reality regarding the effects of marijuana (Lane PG). It is important to recognize that there are many myths associated with marijuana. Marijuana use is widely accepted for Americans, yet it is not legal in most instances. According to Annas, the Medical Marijuana initiative was passed in California in 1996 (Annas 435). Annas said, "The law allows physicians to recommend marijuana for compassionate use" (435). It was found that more than 80% of those that smoke the substance do not turn to other drugs that are the so-called hard drugs such as cocaine, for example (435). Because of the need for treating patients with such serious ailments as AIDS and cancer, marijuana should be classified as a Schedule II drug, and recommended by physicians for the treatment of ...
