examines her life and work and then discusses the irony of her death and what she could have done to protect herself against the dangers she faced in her research.
Marie Curie: Life and Works Marie was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867 and was born to the name Maria Sklodowski (Hole, 2005). Her parents were teachers and
as such she clearly knew the value of an education, especially when we understand that her father was caught teaching the Polish, something that was forbidden by Russian rule at
the time (Hole, 2005). Her mother died when she was relatively young and when she was old enough Marie, as well as her siblings, had to get jobs to help
support the family (Hole, 2005). At one point she was a tutor to a family where she made enough money to be able to send it to her father and
a sister who was studying medicine (Hole, 2005). This sister married a medical student and they asked for Marie to come live with them where she could study at
a good university (Hole, 2005). "Marie studied physics and mathematics and quickly received her masters degrees in both subjects. She remained in Paris after graduation and started research on magnetism"
(Hole, 2005). It was this research, which required more room than she had, that led to her being introduced to Pierre Curie (Hole, 2005). "Not only did Marie move her
equipment into his lab, Marie and Pierre fell in love and married" (Hole, 2005). Pierre and Marie had a friend named A. Henri Becquerel (Hole, 2005). He had made some
