19th century. It is a tale that speaks of social realities and social changes. And, in the middle of all these changes is a woman, Marian Yule, whose father is
a declining author of criticism. Her father, an intellectual of sorts, has never really achieved his own dream and in this novel we see how he pulls his daughter into
his realm, hoping that she can be what he never was. Marian, in these respects, presents us with a very central figure in a novel about the cut-throat materialistic world
that is publishing in London. The following paper examines the character of Marian, describing her development and how others see her. Marian When we first see Marian we
see her as a very simple and quiet young woman. Gissing illustrates her in the following: "Marian Yule spoke in rather slow tones, thoughtfully, gently; she had linked her fingers,
and laid her hands, palms downwards, upon her lap--a nervous action. Her accent was pure, unpretentious; and she used none of the fashionable turns of speech which would have suggested
the habit of intercourse with distinctly metropolitan society" (Chapter II). In this our first impression of Marian is that she is perhaps young, inexperienced, and surely not a woman who
finds the novelties of society to hold any importance. She is obviously not pretentious and she is not perhaps wealthy for she does not act in a superior manner with
social clich?s. We immediately, perhaps think that Marian is a woman without a strong will, or a strong intellect. She seems, in other words, like a simple woman without
