during an era in which scriptural references that forbade women teaching were interpreted as a general prohibition against women being allowed to speak in public, particularly in regards to audience
that included men, as well as women. In 1828, Frances Wright, a white woman, created a scandal by speaking in public and she is the only other American-born lecturer prior
to Maria Stewart, of which historians are aware. From the beginning of her public speaking career, Stewart never hesitated to state her opinions and beliefs. In September of 1832,
she stood up during an anti-slavery rally held at Bostons Franklin Hall, and voiced her opposition to the movement that proposed sending free blacks back to Africa, rather than address
the multiple and systemic injustices that African Americans faced daily in their lives during this era. Her first lecture was delivered in 1832 at the African American Female Intelligence
Society, which is one of the many institutions founded by free black middle-class community of Boston. The audience for this lecture was entirely comprised of black women; however, her next
lecture, which occurred on September 21, 1832, was delivered to an audience that included both genders. William Lloyd Garrison published the text of both lectures in his newspaper, The Liberator,
as well as several of Stewarts essays. Stewarts connection with Garrison began when she brought him a religious-political treatise that she had written in the fall of 1831 and, impressed,
Garrison published it as a pamphlet (Polter 22). In this pamphlet, Religion and the Pure Principles of Morality, the Sure Foundation on Which We Must Build, one finds all of
