"Maria Montessori was born...in the year 1870" in Italy (Standing 21). She was, as a young child, apparently very concerned with other people, struggling to help them and serving
as a very helpful little individual. Standing notes, "Just as we shall find her all her life interested in the underdog, so she has always tended to be a peacemaker"

medicine (Standing). One author states that it was in 1896 that she received "her Doctorate of Medicine degree" becoming the "first woman to graduate from the University of Romes School

develop an interest in the educational needs of the disabled children, a focus that would lead to an interest in teaching all children.
