the beginning by looking at Maria. In this story we can see that there were two main ways in which society would define a woman, the first was by her
marriage with the husband being seen as dominant and the lord of the wife, even if these enlightened times. The second was by the lack of many aspects that could
be present in the female life and the need for finding definition which would also result in definition being given though motherhood.
Maria is subject to the whim of her husband, and it has been her husbands desire to rid himself of his wife, so she is seen to be in a
cell and seeking to convince those who jail her that she is not insane. She herself recognises the difficulty in this situation as well as the depravity of the scheme
that has out her here. Wollstonecraft states "To the master of this most horrid of prisons, she had, soon after her entrance, raved of injustice, in accents that would have
justified his treatment, had not a malignant smile, when she appealed to his judgement, with a dreadful conviction stifled her remonstrations " (Wollstonecraft 62).
Men have the power over women in most areas, they know this and to fight against it women are seen as placing themselves outside the system, in this
case proving the claims they are insane. When Maria does not want to eat, even though she is seen to be lucid
and appear sane, the lack of eating food is interpreted as being the symptom of madness and the appearance of sanity also indicated to the attendants the need for Maria
