This is a 5 page paper giving a modern analysis of the film and play “India Song” by Marguerite Duras. “India Song”, a play and film by Marguerite Duras uses modern theatrical aspects in order to portray the modern day issues of feminism and colonization. The play tells the story of Anne-Marie Stretter in 1930s India. Instead of a staged production with dialogue between the characters however, Duras has created a play and film in which dismembered voices, music and sounds of the streets all are choreographed to depict Stretter’s and India’s feeling of alienation.

day vision and memories of Duras in her passionate drive to portray the plight of women in modern day society. The play and subsequent film depict all of the loneliness
and angst felt by the widow of the ambassador of France, Anne-Marie Stretter, left in the Indies in the 1930s. Duras, a pseudonym for Marguerite Donnadieu, knows of what she
writes. Born in Gia Dinh, Indochina which is now Vietnam, she lived there until she was seventeen at which point she moved back to France with her family and attended
the Sorbonne. She became involved with the Communist Party and was later expelled when she condemned their policies and proposed her revisionist ideals. She was considered as part of the
"New Novel Group" but considered herself as more of a writer than a philosopher although her stories and her plays were filled with the modern aspects of alienation, memories and
feelings of forgetfulness (Marguerite Duras). In "India Song", Duras tells of the life during the 1930s in a fashionable district along the Ganges.
The story is about Anne-Marie Stretter but is not told in straight text or dialogue but rather in her memories and the memories of others through voices in the background
which float through the crowd of characters and the viewers like bewitched echoes. These voices were considered by Duras as not only one of the most crucial elements in the
