the case that anthropologists live with their subjects and observe them for a time. It is not easy to study and document various cultures because the anthropologist is often perceived
as an outsider. However, sometimes these social scientists will study cultures which are closer to their own situations. One well known sociologist who pioneered a method of collecting data is
Margaret Mead. In fact, Mead is a legend in the field and is also known for the promotion of ethnographic film. The use of this technique in the medium
is something of interest because it revolutionized the way that cultures were captured. Indeed, with the use of film, anthropologists would be able to film indigenous cultures and bring them
to the larger society, something that was unheard of in the past. With attention to detail, the people would be well informed about the nuances of various lesser known societies.
Ethnographic film would take on a meaning of its own. As time progressed, it would become more and more important but also, better executed. Advances in technology would see
to that. But at the time Mead was alive and making film, things were not as they are today. There had been attention to capturing reality, and artistic flair was
considered, but they were not privy to the aesthetic possibilities that exist today. Still, Mead pushed to create a medium that is both authentic and educational. In respect to
what Mead did with film, there emerged a new way to document things. Margaret Mead would object to anthropologists merely using words. That said, she did write a lot down
in addition to her romps with film. Still, her ideas were revolutionary because scientists would use words for the most part. While mathematicians and those in the "pure sciences" would
