things. The following paper examines the significance of the loons in Laurences story. Margaret Laurences "The Loons" The story is one about a young girl and her father
and how her father insists they take along, and befriend, a native girl named Piquette who is withdrawn and alone, on a vacation to the lake with them. At this
lake are loons, but the loons are slowly disappearing because of mans encroachment on their environment. For anyone who has ever heard a loon, or knows anything of these birds,
they make a noise that is unforgettable. They are also birds with striking markings. And, in many ways one could claim that they are also somewhat allusive, making their noises
generally at night, thus haunting the night air with their mournful cries. In returning to the story, the young girl, Vanessa, who is being essentially asked to help Piquette
is reluctant and seems to not care at all. This is quite natural for a young girl growing up for understanding the suffering of another is not something most young
people can really comprehend until they have grown. That is also very symbolic of the loons in the story because Vanessa does not realize, as a child, how special these
birds are. She knows that her father finds them fascinating but as a young girl she has more on her mind than birds. Not until she is older will she
realize how magical and important they are to her. From this perspective one sees that the character of Vanessa cares about as much for Piquette as she does the
