the United States, in the twenty-first century. The landscape is little more than a wasteland contaminated by the radiation from a cataclysmic nuclear war. The society is a
patriarchy in the extreme, with the only role women have is based upon their reproductive capabilities. Because of radioactive contamination, most of the Gilead women have been rendered infertile.
But the few who are still capable of having children, the handmaids, are expected to serve the Commanders and the Republic by sustaining the population should their wives be
incapable of reproduction. If they successfully give birth, they are spared the hellish fate of being banished to the colonies, where they spend the remainder of their lives cleaning
up radiation leaks and toxic spills. Biblical symbolism is evident throughout a novel that eerily sounds very much like the Old Testaments Book of Genesis. In The Handmaids
Tale, there are generally two types of women - the radical types like Moira who will go to dramatic lengths to try to secure some type of liberation or the
completely submissive wives and handmaids who never step beyond their male-defined boundaries. But Offred, whose first-person narrative comprises most of the
text, falls somewhere between the two female extremes. Her first-person narrative comprises much of the novel (Sisk 108). Offred is a handmaid who offers what appears to be
a believable glimpse into Gilead and the ways in which sexual desire is manipulated to control population and to maintain law and order. She often appears to be the
stereotypical Gilead handmaid, and usually does as she is told. However, there are those fleeting moments when rebellion overtakes Offred and she will exert what little will she has
