dreams and love and fear. And, in many ways all of the themes in this work can truly be seen in one character, Oryx, a woman who is many things.
The following paper examines the role of Oryx in Margaret Atwoods "Oryx and Crake." The paper illustrates that she is many things, and is surely not a flat character, but
a necessary part of the story that unfolds, embodying all that is desirable, all that is truth, in the world. Oryx The story, though always changing in terms
of its time and reference, is first the story of two friends, two men, Crake and Jimmy. In the beginning of the novel Jimmy is now the Snowman, symbolic of
the allusive abominable snowman, and is perhaps the only human left alive. There are humanoids, however, the Crakers, named after his friend Crake. Jimmy and Crake are socially and
economically privileged individuals. They have essentially been able to have anything they want, do anything they want, and learn all they possibly can. They are, however, vaguely unhappy it seems
as the world is filled with poison and chaos and destruction. They meet Oryx at a time when they are perhaps struggling to find some answers, and they actually first
meet her, or rather see her, on a recording when she was perhaps eight and she was one of many young girls in Asian porn films: "[K]ids were plentiful...you could
buy anything you wanted. This was how the two of them first saw Oryx. She was only about eight, or she looked eight. They could never find out for certain
