the south. For New Orleans, Louisiana, Mardi Gras brings in millions of dollars each year and has done so for quite awhile. Not too long ago, Hurricane Katrina hit the
area. Many residents would rebuild but greater than half of the residents have not been back to their homes in New Orleans ("History of New Orleans," 2007). The storm not
only had an effect on daily life as it had an impact on Mardi Gras as well. Yet, Mardi Gras has been around for many decades. It is not likely
that the hurricane will significantly impact the economy, or Mardi Gras, over the long term. At least, over the course of centuries, Hurricane Katrina will be a small historical fact
and not something that changed things forever. In general, tourism is big in New Orleans and at the tail end of the 1900s became a significant "force in the local
economy" ("History of New Orleans," 2007). Mardi Gras has a very long and interesting history. The carnival is really found as early as 1699 as the explorers who came to
the region would celebrate the holiday ("The History of Mardi Gras," 2007). Today, various organizations take part in the parades and this carnival quickly become important ("The History of Mardi
Gras," 2007). Some call it Fat Tuesday, which is what the term Mardi Gras actually means ("The History of Mardi Gras," 2007). When is Mardi Gras celebrated? The date of
the celebration changes every year and much depends upon the lunar calendar ("The History of Mardi Gras," 2007). It all depends upon when Easter falls ("The History of Mardi Gras,"
2007). Fat Tuesday is a reference to the idea that people will enjoy themselves for one last day-- indulging in food for example-before they give up something for Ash Wednesday
