kind of abstract modern art is art, especially if they base their concept of art on the masters from long ago. However, there are many elements and many perspectives that go into the creation of an art piece, elements and perspectives which are primarily what make the piece art, or not. In an editorial which appeared in the 1917 edition of the periodical "The Blind Man," presumably an editorial written by Duchamp and a friend, both of whom owned the periodical, the author states, "Whether Mr. Mutt with his own hands made a fountain or not has no importance. He CHOSE it. He took an ordinary article of life, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared under the new title and point of view - created a new thought for that object" (Collection Tate). The following paper utilizes this particular perspective while examining Marcel Duchamps readymades. Marcel Duchamp: Readymades For all intents and purposes Marcel Duchamps readymades are nothing more than elements, already made, that Duchamp put together. There is not really any particular technique he used in altering the pieces, rather he just combined things that already existed, creating what he terms readymades. According to one author, "The readymades stand as a challenge to the long cherished assumptions that art is a special kind of activity, properly set apart from the rest of life, and that artworks are expressions of individual vision or feeling" (Seigel 3). In essence, as noted in the quote in the introduction, Duchamp "created a new thought" for the objects he used in his readymades.
