Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction The Chinese civilization is one of the oldest on the planet. It had a number of dynasties and emperors in its long history, until the 20th century, when it became a Communist nation. This paper considers whether or not Mao Zedong, the Communist leader, could in some senses be considered an "emperor." While it appears that this appellation may be applied with some justification, the comparisons between Mao and the historical emperors of China are not always favorable. Discussion The short answer is yes, in many respects Mao could be considered an emperor. Perhaps the easiest way to justify this claim is to compare him to past emperors. Jasper Becker talks about the reign of one Zhu Yuanzhang, who emerged as a leader in China in the 1300s. After the overthrow of the Mongol dynasty, "Zhu named himself the new emperor of China and in 1368 established the Ming dynasty" (Becker, 2006, p. 167). He then began creating a "new utopian social order, but as he grew older he became a paranoid tyrant who ordered horrifyingly violent purchase of his followers" (Becker, p. 167). Mao Zedongs life is so similar to Zhu Yuanzhangs that its creepy: he was a peasant leader who was involved in "a rebellion against foreign invaders" followed by military conquest, and then he founded a new dynasty that promised a "utopian social order," but eventually descended into "tyranny, purges and mass starvation" (Becker, 2006, p. 167).
