stock characters-the Devil always makes an appearance-and teaches a moral to the audience. Mankind is also a morality play, but its characters are so immoral that its hard to justify
putting it in that category. In Everyman, characters include God, Death, Everyman and Knowledge; in Mankind, we find the names Mischief, New-Gyse (new guise), Mercy and Mankind. The names immediately
suggest that Mankind is not going to be nearly as serious and moralizing as Everyman, and indeed that is one of the main differences. The tone of Mankind is much
lighter, seeking perhaps to make its point with humor rather than hammering the audience over the head with tales of Gods suffering, or threatening them with the torments of hell.
The first character to appear in Everyman is the Messenger, who tells the audience to pay attention and learn, since life is transitory and sin is not as attractive as
it seems at first: " Ye think sin in the beginning full sweet, / Which in the end causeth thy soul to weep, / When the body lieth in clay"
(Everyman). What hes saying is that while sin may be enjoyable when we first encounter it, it will cause us agony after we die. The main character of the
play is Everyman, who obviously stands for everyone in the audience. This is play designed to teach a lesson, and the lesson is simple. God laments that although he died
for Man, they dont remember him: "They forget clean, and shedding of my blood red; / I hanged between two, it cannot be denied; / To get them life I
suffered to be dead" (Everyman). They also "use the seven deadly sins damnable" - that is, they commit all kinds of sins. God calls Death to him and tells him
