The following paper first analyzes Manets "Young Girl on the Threshold of the Garden at Bellevue" from 1880, examining various elements of the painting. The paper then discusses "The Sea" by Courbet from 1873 and then finishes with a discussion of Monets "The Bridge Over the Water-Lily Pond" (1899). Manet and Monets paintings represent the Impressionist movement while Courbets painting is representative of the Realist movement. Courbet In Courbets "The Sea" the brush strokes appear to be incredibly heavy with the paint. There is the subtle sense that Impressionism is taking place, but this was a realist painting and was painted in the period prior to Impressionism and thus only hints at the coming trend. It is a very dark painting which is comprised namely of black and greys, however there is a hint of green in the sea and also neutral tans and browns in the sand. The picture is incredibly horizontal in that we are seeing the horizon and the linear quality of the repetitive waves in the sea. Despite all of the linear aspects, however, there is also a softness to the painting that is achieved through the stormy dark clouds that are very sensuous in their round form. We are also given the flowing nature of the waves despite their horizontal position. One also notes that there is not other subject matter besides the sea and the environment. The sea and the clouds and the shore do not necessarily outweigh one another, but all seem to be part of the sea.
