infection with the human papilloma virus (Ramirez, 2007). It is important to emphasize however, that HPV comes in over 100 different types and that only 30 of these types
are sexually transmitted (Caron, Kispert, and McGrath, 2009). In June 2006 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine that has proven effective in preventing the contraction of
two specific types (types 16 and 18) of this virus by young girls (Caron, Kispert, and McGrath, 2009). Contraceptive Technology Update (2007) clarifies that the approval has been accompanied
by the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Family of Physicians publication of the Childhood Immunization
Schedule that recommends "routine use of the vaccine for females ages 11-12, and permissive use of the vaccine in females as early as age 9 and up to age 26".
