advising parents to place children on drugs such as Ritalin or Adderall, which are the most popular psychotropic drugs for the treatment of ADD and ADHD. Parents and authorities,
however, have become concerned over the tremendous increase in the number of children currently taking psychotropic drugs. While the benefits from these drugs can offset the inherent risks in
these powerful medications, concerns over adverse side effects have prompted a great deal of public attention to this issue. Considering the serious consequences that can result from these drugs, parents
and policymakers have become particularly agitated by school policies that demanded that certain students should be placed on psychotropic drugs as a prerequisite for school attendance. There have been reported
cases in which a parents refusal to place a child on medication has resulted in the child being taken into custody by local social services.i The following examination of this
topic focuses on how recent legislation impacts the practicing educator, and is designed to assist school personnel in a better understanding of the current application of the law, as well
as analyzing and evaluating the issues involved. This examination will show that the new legal directives in regards to Ritalin use are actually in the best interest of educators, as
