the right goods are in place at the right price for the consumers at the right time with the desired attributes or characteristics (Zaper, 1993). For this reason supply chain
management can be seen as helping reduce costs or increase value as well as a way of meeting consumer needs (Rayport and Sviokla, 1994).
The supply chain is the chain from the production of the raw materials/good through to the end user. For example, a supply chain for a supermarket may be
buying goods to sell to its customers. The goods will come from suppliers who in turn will have other suppliers. This is the upstream supply chain, with the wholesaler first
in the line upwards and at the source the raw material providers and the supermarket the last link in the chain. A number
studies have looked at the supply chain as a whole, while there have concentrated on parts of the supply chain. When looking at the retail suppliers there are several specialist
issues that are not present or present different when suppliers are dealing only with other commercial customers. Sales are often made in smaller quantities with a wider variety of goods
in a single transaction and the need to market to a wider target market (Hooley et al, 1998). If we look at
