readers. This paper discusses the book and what it teaches about managing with heart. In General The book is a sort of modern-day fable; it features a fictional
protagonist, Harry Hartwell, who has a massive heart attack, goes through a near death experience, encounters an angel (with an agenda) in the recovery room, and subsequently changes his life
and the way he does things. His motivation for doing so is strong indeed: if he doesnt mend his ways, the angel will see to it that he
doesnt recover from the heart attack (Kadlecek, 1993). Harry Hartwell is a high-powered executive with the Ramoco Oil Company, and his management style can best be described as "kick butt
and take names." Hes known throughout the organization as being difficult to talk to, and his management style is intimidation combined with veiled insults. For example, in the
opening pages of the book we see Harry on his daily walk through of the company. He comes upon a supervisor named George, someone whos been in the business
as long as he has. George greets him pleasantly and asks that most innocuous of all questions, "Hows it going?" Harry replies that hes doing fine, "But the big
question is hows it going with that wounded number four tower? He smiled at George and pointed at the distillation tower that hadnt been running at capacity for almost
