how well they manage diversity in the workplace. But how, exactly, can diversity be managed? And how does it affect everyones career? Some employees are proud of their companys progressive efforts to recognize "nontraditional" employees. Others worry as they visualize personnel conflicts and changes they are not prepared for. Many professionals believe that diversity is an issue for the human resources department to deal with. Compliance regulations and E.E.O. forms come to mind. Or, they see it as just another management fad. But the demographic changes that brought about this issue affect everyone in the workplace and from what I have learned, it is anything but a passing fad. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, annual work force growth in the United States will slow dramatically. The work force grew 2 percent a year from 1976 to 1988 but will only grow 1.2 percent a year from 1988 to the year 2000. Only 32 percent of new workers will be white males. Their share of the total labor force is shrinking from 51 percent in 1980 to a projected 45 percent in 2000, and will decrease to 40 percent by 2010. Women will make up about 47 percent of workers. Minorities and immigrants will hold 26 percent of all jobs, up from 22 percent today. (Kohl, 1995). II.
