to manage a diverse workforce is an examination of ones own ethnocentricities and preconceptions of others. This essay begins by defining diversity. A discussion of the benefits of a
diverse workforce is next, followed by a lengthy discussion on managing a diverse workforce. What is Diversity One of the problems concerning discussions on diversity is that some people
equate diversity with affirmative action. The problem with the word is that it conjures up preconceived images and when diversity is perceived as being just another word for affirmative action,
which is associated with ethnicity and race and quotas, negative feelings often erupt. Diversity, however, encompasses far more than having people from different races or ethnicities on the payroll. It
has to do with gender, age, background, nationality, talent, skills, knowledge levels, sexual orientation, values, race and ethnicity. Terrance A. Larsen, CEO of CoreStates Financial Corp. said; "For us, diversity
is accepting differences in the way we do things, not just differences in the way we look or where weve come from" (American Banker, 1997, p. A14). This seems to
be more in line with what is the reality of the workforce today. It is not just color, it has to do with different viewpoints and different skills and talent.
