time has come to be recognized as a contributor to disease and as a hindrance to healing. Many studies have examined the link between physical and psychological health and
stress. Heart disease and stroke have long been associated with elevated stress levels over time; more recently cancer has been linked to stress and now even diabetes - already
an official "epidemic" - has been linked to too much negative stress. Work stress is a factor for virtually everyone in todays business
environment. Individuals reactions to the same stressors can be quite different, with one stressor creating significant stress response in one individual but barely being acknowledged by another. The
key to managing stress includes recognizing it when it occurs, taking action against it and learning to be one of those who are truly bothered by very little. The Nature
of Stress It is often difficult to strike a balance between beneficial and detrimental stress. Work stress can be alleviated in part
by effective management techniques, specifically Total Quality Management (TQM) and its dependence on striving for excellence and continuous improvement. The focus on continually seeking ways to improve processes and
approaches inherently carries the message that existing processes - and individuals - not only are not "perfect," neither are they expected to be.
